The diagnostics and repair of a tube amp is perhaps equal parts science and art - there are very few places to learn it and few masters of the craft willing to divulge their hard won secrets.
Day 1. Tube Amp Diagnostics & Repair I - Fundamentals
Students will gain a broad understanding of tube amp circuitry and troubleshooting and learn closely guarded trade secrets through lectures with demonstrations that range from emergency repairs to full restoration. Options for the scope of repairs are disclosed. Suggested tools and materials for an emergency repair kit will be outlined.
Day 2. Tube Amp Diagnostics & Repair II - Advanced Techniques
Students will learn to use an oscilloscope in conjunction with a signal generator in addition to decibel meters and frequency counters to modify tone. Modifications, advanced implementation of effects systems and pro audio interfacing will round out the curriculum. This course focuses on tube theory; to determine wattage, tube parameters, and will teach you how to get the most out of diagnostic equipment. Fine details of sound will be demonstrated, explained and discussed.
