Event Venue: CHICAGO SCHOOL OF GUITAR MAKING

Description:

[B]uild your own hand wired effects pedal. This is an excellent introduction to hand-wiring audio circuits and electronics, with lectures and demonstrations in a hands-on workshop. Students will build a guitar effects pedal from a kit. Instruction and a dedicated workbench equipped with all of the tools and supplies necessary to complete the pedal are provided. No experience necessary. Make your own effects pedals!

Student will learn construction techniques used in many electronics projects, including how to select components, use shop tools, and a soldering iron.  All aspects of pedal building from reading a schematic to hand wiring a complete circuit are covered.

Topics include:

  • Schematics and layouts
  • Point to point wiring vs. etched pc boards
  • Components: identifying and understand their function in the circuit
  • Soldering techniques
  • Hand wiring a circuit
  • Layout and drilling an enclosure
  • True bypass switching
Kits Students may choose from the following kits to build in this class: Kits are complete and include all the little extras like knobs, and shipping.
  • Tremolito - Tremolo.  Vintage Blackface Fender Amp sound.
  • 855 Drive - Tube Screamer. OD855 clone with true mechanical bypass + higher quality film caps.
  • Lil Orange - Phaser. Exact clone of the Script Logo era Phase 90, at half the size.
  • Classic Delay - Up to 300ms delay, slap-back, ambient, and short delay.
  • Li'l Reverb - Hall reverb. Incredibly quiet and tiny.
Fee Tuition includes instruction, hands-on workshop, use of a dedicated guitar service bench, specialized tools and the shop supplies necessary for the completion of this project. Kit costs are in addition to tuition. Instructors Yair Erez   Yair Erez is a SPECIMEN amp and guitar technician.  He has taught taught Tube Amp Building and Bone Nut and Saddle Making at CSGM. With an electronics engineering background, Yair's commitment to luthiery and sound brought him to the Chicago School of Guitar Making, where he was trained in Tube Amp Electronics and Guitar Building by CSGM founder and chief instructor Ian Schneller and in Tube Amp Diagnostics and Repair by Kye Kennedy. Yair's classes combine practical and theoretical tools in a user-friendly way. Ian Schneller Ian Schneller is the founder and chief instructor of the Chicago School of Guitar Making. With over 800 handmade instruments and tube amplifiers bearing his Specimen name, he brings a wellspring of knowledge to the classroom with the mission of perpetuating the tradition of handcraft and design innovation. He has shown his work in a variety of museums around the country and is a faculty member of the Sculpture Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
