Description:

[L]earn to build your own hand-wired effects pedals. Students will build two effect pedals from excellent kits. At the end of the session pedals will be ready for testing. Make your own effects pedals! No experience necessary. This hands-on workshop is an excellent introduction to audio electronics and hand-wiring circuits. All aspects of pedal building from reading a schematic to hand wiring a circuit are covered. Students will learn construction techniques used in many electronics projects including the use of shop tools and a soldering iron.

Students work at their own pace and the time required to complete a pedal will vary with the complexity of each pedal. We encourage students who finish their project with time to spare in the workshop, to make the most of their time at the school. If they would like to build more pedals they can choose from the available menu of pedal kits for purchase at the school and make more pedals.

Pedal kits options:

• Delay -  Classic analog tone. PT2399 digital delay chip. 300ms delay, slap-back, ambient, short delay.
• Tremolo - Vintage Blackface Fender tremolo sound.
• Overdrive - Tube Screamer. OD855 replica with true mechanical bypass + higher quality film caps.
• Phase -Half the size replica of Script Logo era Phase 90.
• Reverb - Hall reverb. Incredibly quiet and tiny!

Lecture and demonstrations include:

• Schematics and layouts
• Circuits and components
• Etched pc boards
• True bypass circuitry
• Point to point wiring
• Hand wiring a circuit
• Soldering techniques

Fee Fee includes the purchase of two kits of choice from among our kit menu. Tuition fees includes instruction, reference material, guided hands on workshop with the use of an individual workbench, specialized tools, and all shop supplies necessary to complete this project. Kits and Supplies Tooling and shop supplies required to complete the project are provided. Kits are included in the total fee. More kits from our kit menu may be purchased at the school. Additional kits are $75 each. Schedule Format Two Day Workshops:  Sat & Sun 11 am – 5 pm, 12 hours -or- Summer Session: Wed & Thur, 11 am – 5 pm, 12 hours Instructor Yair Erez has been a trusted amp and string technician for Specimen since 2016. Coming from an electronics engineering background, Yair's classes combine practical and theoretical tools in a user-friendly way. Yair's long enthusiasm and commitment to sound brought him to the Chicago School of Guitar Making, where he was trained by Specimen's founder and chief instructor Ian Schneller, as well as by Kye Kennedy. Ian Schneller is the founder and chief instructor of the Chicago School of Guitar Making. With over 800 handmade instruments and tube amplifiers bearing his Specimen name, he brings a wellspring of knowledge to the classroom with the mission of perpetuating the tradition of handcraft and design innovation. He has shown his work in a variety of museums around the country and is a faculty member of the Sculpture Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
