Description: [T]his seminar is a comprehensive presentation and demonstration of the techniques required to execute a professional quality re-fret on a guitar, bass or other fretted instrument. This is the ideal seminar for anyone working as a guitar technician, roadie, music store employee, touring musician or for anyone interested in working on instruments. Description With both lecture and hands-on training, students are guided through each step of a re-fret and execute the process themselves. Lecture and demonstrations will address all types of fret jobs, including bound and unbound boards, finished vs unfinished, different wood types, fret sizes, playing styles and the pros and cons of various tools. Topics include:

• Instrument assessment
• Nut and fret removal
• Fretboard and slot preparation
• Binding considerations
• Fret selection
• Fret cleaning
• Fret rolling
• Fret measuring and cutting
• Fret installing and gluing
• Fretboard clean-up
• Fret leveling
• Fret beveling
• Fret crowning and polishing
• Nut re-installation (or making a new nut)

Materials and Supplies The school will provide each student with their own individual workstation and all necessary tools. We can also provide an instrument to any student who does not wish to re-fret their own. Schedule Weeknights: 7 pm - 9:30 pm, the same evening each week over 4 consecutive weeks Weekends: 11 am - 5pm, Saturday and Sunday Fee $425, Weeknights $525, Weekends *An early registration discount may apply. Tuition includes lecture/demonstrations, personal instruction, handout materials and use of specialized tools, guitar workbench and shop supplies. Instructors Pete Mueller Pete is a guitar builder and repair technician at Specimen. Pete teaches Electric Guitar Building, Lap Steel Guitar Building, Setup & Maintenance for Guitar and Bass, Bone Nut & Saddle Making, Advanced Repairs and Fretting Workshop at the Chicago School of Guitar Making.
