Event Venue: CHICAGO SCHOOL OF GUITAR MAKING

Description: [A] one day workshop. Learn techniques required to fix an instrument's electronic problems on the spot, as well as how to select components, install electronic upgrades, design and build your own guitar circuits, and read schematics and layout diagrams.  Learn how to repair and upgrade the electronics in any instrument to achieve the best possible sound and reliability.   A must for guitar tech or roadie.

Schedule

Saturdays 10 am - 5 pm.

Enrollment

Enrollment is limited to 8 students.

Fee

$385.   Tuition includes lectures and demonstrations, personal instruction, handout materials, use of specialized tools, guitar workbench and shop supplies.

Course Description

Each class is divided into part lecture, part demonstration, and part hands-on training.  IMG_0509 Topics covered include:

    • Shielding
    • Electronic trouble-shooting
    • Coil taps
    • Phase switching
    • Pickup design characteristics
    • Lead dress
    • Soldering skills
    • Electronic test equipment
    • Acoustic guitar preamps
    • Active electronics
    • Arch-top guitar wiring harness removal and installation
    • Body routing to fit pickups

Workshop Materials & Tools

The course instructor will be available to consult with and guide students in the selection of replacement components.  All the tools required will be available for the student's class use.

Richard Phillis   Richard is a guitar maker and repair technician at Specimen.  Rich teaches Effects Pedal Building, Guitar Electronics and Finishing & Relicing Workshops at the Chicago School of Guitar Making. _DSC2704

You can come in to the shop during business hours and enroll using cash, your credit card, or a personal check. We’re open Monday through Friday 12 – 7 pm, Saturday 12-5 pm.
