Event Venue: CHICAGO SCHOOL OF GUITAR MAKING

Description: [S]tudents will learn techniques required to fix an instrument’s electronic problems on the spot, how to select components, install electronic upgrades, and how to design and build their own guitar circuits to achieve the best possible sound and reliability. Students will also learn how to read schematics and layout diagrams. A must for any guitar tech or roadie! Description Each class is divided into part lecture, part demonstration, and part hands-on training. Topics covered include:

  • Circuit design
  • Shielding
  • Electronic trouble-shooting
  • Coil taps
  • Phase switching
  • Pickup design characteristics
  • Lead dress
  • Soldering skills
  • Electronic test equipment
  • Acoustic guitar preamps
  • Active electronics
  • Arch-top guitar wiring harness removal and installation
  • Body routing to fit pickups
Materials and Supplies The course instructor will be available to consult with and guide students in the selection of replacement components. All the tools required will be available for the student's class use. Schedule Weeknights: 7 - 9:30pm, over 3 nights Fee Weeknights: $385 Tuition includes lectures and demonstrations, personal instruction, handout materials, use of specialized tools, guitar workbench and shop supplies

Instructor Richard Phillis Richard is a guitar builder, repair technician and surface finisher at Specimen. He teaches Effects Pedal BuildingGuitar ElectronicsElectric Guitar BuildingLap Steel Guitar BuildingGuitar and Bass RepairSetup & Maintenance for Guitar and Bass and Finishing Techniques at the Chicago School of Guitar Making.
