Description: [L]earning the elusive craft of setting up a stringed instrument for optimal tone and playability will reward every musician with a greater understanding and appreciation of their instrument. This course explains the fundamental mechanical operation of the guitar and all other stringed instruments, including all types of guitars and bass guitars (acoustic and electric). This is an excellent introductory course that offers a wealth of information. Armed with this information, you will be prepared to handle many unpredictable circumstances that for most musicians would be show-stoppers. Whether or not you decide to perform your own maintenance in the future, taking this course will enable you to deal confidently with the local luthier and to have the best interests of your instrument in mind. Description The class offers lecture and demonstrations, and varying amount of hands-on bench time (see below). This course will address different different playing styles and the pros and cons of various products and hardware. Students who complete this class may wish to schedule additional hands-on workshop time in our OPEN WORKSHOPS. • Intonation/saddle compensation
• Neck relief
• Neck pitch
• Truss rod adjustment
• String break angles
• Selecting string gauges and types
• Height of strings at nut
• Nut and saddle making

Schedule Weeknight Workshop: 7 pm - 9:30pm, consecutive Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings Weekend Workshop: 10 am - 5 pm, Saturday and Sunday One Day Fast Track Seminar: 10 am - 5pm, Saturday Two Weeknights Fast Track Seminar: 7pm - 9:30 pm, Tuesday and Wednesday Fee $485 Weekend  - 14 hours. Tuition includes lectures and demonstrations with Q & A, hands-on workshops, with the use of an individual guitar workbench, specialized tools and the necessary shop supplies for this course. Student receive their own Set-up handbook with course and reference materials.  Students are encouraged to bring their own instrument. Catered lunches and beverages are served and are included. $385 One Day/Fast Track Seminar  -  7 hours. Tuition includes lectures and demonstrations with Q & A, a hands-on workshop, with the use of an individual guitar workbench, specialized tools and the necessary shop supplies for this course. Student receive their own Set-up handbook with course and reference materials. Students are encouraged to bring their own instrument. A catered lunch and beverages are served and are included. $275  Weeknight - 7 hours. Tuition includes lectures and demonstrations with Q & A, and  a hands-on workshop, with the use of an individual guitar workbench, specialized tools and the necessary shop supplies for this course. Student receive their own Set-up handbook with course and reference materials.  Students are encouraged to bring their own instrument. $185.  Two Evenings/Fast Track Seminar - 5 hours.  Tuition includes lectures and demonstrations with Q & A. Student receive their own Set-up handbook with course and reference materials. Students who complete this seminar may be interested in scheduling hands-on workshop time in our OPEN WORKSHOPS. Which class is right for you? Workshops that include hands-on bench time and are perfect for those who enjoy learning by doing. Fast track seminars are primarily lecture and demonstration with Q & A and is good for those who prefer a thorough overview and taking notes. Student testimonials:

Ian Schneller is the founder and chief instructor of the Chicago School of Guitar Making. With over 800 handmade instruments bearing his Specimen name, he brings a wellspring of knowledge to the classroom with the mission of perpetuating the tradition of handcraft and design innovation. He has shown his work in a variety of museums around the country and is a faculty member of the Sculpture Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago
